Respect the specified manufacturing route
If a drawing specifies a casting or forging, that requirement forms part of the enquiry. A supplier proposal for a different process needs technical review and approval from the responsible customer team.
Do not compare manufacturing routes solely on a general claim about strength, tooling cost or lead time.
Clarify the material and acceptance requirements
Identify the grade, required condition, testing and documentation. Ask how the supplier maintains material and batch identity through processing and subsequent operations.
Understand tooling and first-article work
Discuss ownership, storage and modification of tooling, expected sample timing and the work needed to qualify the first article. Tooling economics depend on the component, process and expected quantities.
Include the complete manufacturing sequence
Heat treatment, machining, surface finishing and testing can materially affect the quotation and schedule. Establish which supplier is responsible for each stage and how subcontracted work is controlled.
Compare evidence and remaining questions
Review relevant capability, quotation assumptions and the proposed quality plan. A factory audit or trial order can then be scoped to the main uncertainties.
